The first holly cross I made from the same lovely white batch of holly as the two thrones above. From the 5th of June it will be in Crediton church for the week of the flower festival
where it will be displayed in the lady chapel with a floral display.I am thrilled about this as its first public outing .Not only is Crediton church the original cathedral site before Exeter was chosen as more suitable, and very busy during the festival, but also on the saint micheal ley line and called the church of the holy cross.Seems the perfect place for the holly cross.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473089183120089282" style="DISPLAY: block; I love this place,it is my creative heaven.

bloody compooters

I have lost all internet connection,a problem with one of the phone companies or a lead somewhere.Either way I will not be on much till i get it sorted, hopefully this won't be to long.I am actually sitting in front of Dougs pooter at the moment, waiting for him to finish tea so we can go make some loud rock noises over the jam room.We have a gig in sandford on sunday night and a craft fair to exhibit at the same day.Dougs just said we need to be there at half nine in the morning, great!!?Bye for now be back as soon as possible

Old is good

The way up to Hameldown tor from Grimspound<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5199087527268162482" style="DISPLAY: block; Saying that people still seemed to like them and seemed really pleased with them so everyone is happy which is always a nice result. Thanks again to Doug for been a top mate and a great help of late.Oh yeah and groovy bass twiddling at last nights gig.!
Now as promised some days ago some pictures of some of the pieces for sale at this time.

close ups of Wych Elm burr and Ash burst

These are two of my favourite creations so far.The back and front pieces of the chair and the upright part of the table are from the same piece of Wych Elm.The seat of the chair is an unusual slice of oak.The cross base for the table is also of oak but very old, again saved from a local barn. The table top is a slice of Ash very well seasoned and clearly showing the rings from what would be a fork in the main trunk. The flame like quality of the elm's burr is a joy as are the corresponding lumps and noddules on the outside, this matched with the natural bursts in the oak and ash give two really interesting pieces. They dont have to be sold as a pair but almost beg to be so. Chair £600 Table £350 or £900 the pair.

I call this my oak tripod totem chair for fairly obvious reasons. The legs were reclaimed from an old devon barn along with the seat,The slice for the back was from a local sawmill owner who kindly puts me back some interesting pieces of timber, a lovely man but thats another story.

This was one of my first carved pieces done before I had any carving chisels. The back was all done with a one inch and a half inch flat chisel and a set of hole cutting drill bits.As with most of my pieces this has had coats of linseed applied over a period of time. The price for this piece would be £ 650 back again

well that was a week that was. afraid blog got neglected.still if anyone is still tuned in ,"hello , its great to be back".
been playing with the lathe a little when have found the time, and came up with a few things.
I am looking forward already to having the chuck piece and chisels for bowl turning as I have a few ideas which I won't go into now but lets just say its why I'm practicing making balls out of different kinds of hard woods .Already I'm figuring out some things about different timbers capabilitys to resist splitting when object is finished therefore weakoned in places.
I think although some of the logs were well seasoned I used them too soon after bringing them in.Others ,touch wood seem not to mind at all.
Have managed to progress on the chair and hope to have it on here in its finished form after the kids go back to school next week,a few finishing touches needed.
I have just had problems putting pics of lathe things on but will try again later or tomorrow.when i do fix whatever problem it is I am going to stick a few other pics up of some stuff I could do with selling .A few bills have caught up and the car runs out of everything next weekend .I dont know if any one or anyone you might know, might like this sort of thing or even if this is out of order to ask on this blog thing, but until some shows in the summer come along I 'm struggling to find an outlet( mostly cos i'm not so good at that side of things, better at making than selling. Some are things you might have already seen some are older pieces from the depths of the shed .All are well seasoned or /and very old devon hardwoods.Burr oak ,Elm,Yew and Apple.Made with pleasure and love by a simple devon man.
I think I'll add a poem

TODAY

The trees in the distance vanish
into clouds on their hilltop
The hissing of the water in the pipes
reminds me I’ve left the tap on
I notice small red spiders
living on my windowsill
Spill half a jar of cider
‘cos I hadn’t screwed the cap on

The wood on the fire bubbles and spits its regret
The pictures more cosy in their frames than ever
The type='text'>looking up

things good, lathe works well and after trying a few different chisels finally found one that does the job,a one size fits all sort of thing.Used some holly my brother john had given me a year ago from some hedge laying he had done on dartmoor.Knocked out a fairly respectable candle stick which when oiled was almost marbley and gave it to him as my first creation on the lathe and with the wood he gave me. I forgot to photograph it but have made one twice as big that will photograph when sanded and oiled tomorrow.
I have been offered a disc sander by a friend who has 2 and finds this one a bit bulky and heavy duty, sounds great. The sun shone well today as i drove along and found some nice wood for the fire in a hedge overlooking a quarry, the birds sang and danced and I felt happy.
what to do

I now have a lathe thanks to my brother John, free of cost and in good running order. It wont help finish the chair or replace my broken tools but it will give me something else to think about in between projects and because it seems quite quiet in the evenings too.Nice one John !.
Cant finish the chair until i have replaced disc sander as wood is just too hard to sand back by hand, although as I said to andrew the last few grades are always done by hand, it would take a lifetime to get to that stage without electrical assistance and a good course sanding disc.
Not quite sure what to do in the meantime, pheraps finish a couple of frames that are half done or start another carving .
I learnt to drive a year ago and the tax ,mot and insurance all run out this month. Not good as I am totally broke.Gonna have to get my salesman head on.
If only that side of things were as enjoyable or came as naturally as the actual creative process it would be ok as I have loads of stuff to sell.As it stands as usual I am going to have to rely on blind faith and luck that everything will be ok.<div as its not coming back this time.In the last couple of months I have killed 1 hammer drill 2 jigsaws 3 saws and now my grinder.

I am never going to buy not the one I wanted cos Icant afford it again.I will just go without until I can afford the one thats up to the job, which is pretty tough with some of this old Oak and Elm.

Luckily I love handtools(always look on the bright side ...)although my shoulders and elbows dom not.The slower pace is really what i need right now and the relative quiet is nice.Since the grinder packed in I found my surform rasp does a good enough job at eating away the corners and my cordless drill/screwdriver still works (touch wood )

my only other 2 working elctric tools are my old portable benchsaw (2 inch cut) a biscuit jointer I was kindly given but only used onc e so far and my twin cassette player, which isnt twin anymore as one door fell off.

At least i have loads of stuff to sell, old and new cheap, dear and dearer.hopefully this summer will bring good things (ever the optimist).

M olly has just stuck her head round the door looked at me like i'm madand asked if she can have a cup of tea. From my benchtop oaken perch I answer yesand carry on writing this.

In case you haven't realisedI am halfway through a bottle of wine,on a half made chair,on a bench in a shed in deepest darkest devonshire, listening to the birds and distant tractors, already thinking of the next project.

Managed to get the whole day in the shed and the chair is now pretty much together and solid.I am really pleased with it so far,a couple of things worked out better than I could have hoped for and it is very comfortable.Tomorrow I will endevour to make some decisions as to how to finish this piece.Back height, with or without cross back rest and style of carving on back if any will all have to be thought through.I love the just standing looking parts of the project the figuring out where to go next with it.More often than not the wood tends to lead me towards its own outcome,a pattern of grain leading me one way or another, natural angles and shapes suggesting where to go,I just go with the flow.
I am glad I managed to take some photos today so you will see the difference in colour and everything between now and the eventually finished thing.
<img width='1' height='1' to hopefully sell in the summer,so I am making another chair with a carved back the best of both worlds,This one is a combination of oaks relatively new and very old,A very laid back chair at this stage.will try to photograph in progress although I've said that before and not got around to it ,next thing its finished.
hello to new blogfriends thanks for comments,I will answer type='text'>

The whole idea of me doing one of these blogs is to get my work out there for people to see, poems that I have had on scraps of paper for ages or in bags in the shed, pictures that took years to do and more importantly for me to show my chairs and carvings to anyone who may be interested or know of an outlet for such work.Almost everything I have made is from well seasoned local (Devon) hardwoods.I use reclaimed where possible which has led to some of the timber used been very old .For example Oak and Elm timbers from old devon barn ,used for chairs and book shelves to inhabit the newly wooded conversion as a reminder of the old are at least 300 years old and the piece of oak for my recently finished carving rescued from a collapsed original part of a devon longhouse listed in the doomsday book could easily be twice that.
Good luck to my mate and fellow blogger Dougie with his wood fired slipware shows this weekend and next couple of weeks, the last firing looked amazing and he deserves to do brilliantly.
He is in fact one of the culprits for talking me into doing one of these things, Nice one!!
more about that another day, along with everything else.
With my daughters help and perhaps naively I have stuck photos of my creations written or sawn throughout this blog and will probably continue to do so.Is this the norm ?I dont know
if anyone does or cares let me know
<img width='1' height='1'
